ABLE: Accurate Blood Loss Estimation
Overview
ABLE: Accurate Blood Loss Estimation is a system to accurately measure blood loss during surgery.
The Issue
The current standard practice for measuring blood loss during surgery is “guestimation”. This can lead to transfusion of excess blood during surgery or to adverse outcomes if not enough blood is transfused. The Society for the Advancement of Blood Management (SABM) estimates that $8 billion worth of unnecessary blood transfusions occur each year.
Approach
The ABLE device and software aim to accurately measure blood loss using a set of linked gravimetric sensors measuring multiple routes of surgical blood loss. The system also includes a sponge counter functionality.
MTM Student Engagement
The MTM team will work on the advancement of a prototype for the use in initial OR tests. The team will also perform a market analysis and create a business and regulatory strategy.
