The Healy Lab at UC Berkeley aims to provide hydrogel-based regenerative solutions to
address volumetric muscle loss.

The Issue

Volumetric Muscle Loss (VML) is a debilitating condition that occurs when a significant
portion of muscle tissue is lost due to injury, leaving individuals with long-term functional
impairments. Addressing VML is a pressing medical challenge, as no approved
therapies currently exist to restore lost muscle volume and quality of life.

Hyaluronic acid-based hydrogels provide a robust and highly adaptable scaffold that
promotes muscular regeneration at a cellular level.
