Why MTM?

The MTM program is offered jointly by UC Berkeley’s Department of Bioengineering and UC San Francisco’s Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences. Students gain exposure to the engineering, innovation, and entrepreneurial culture that define Berkeley, as well as the clinical excellence and biomedical research of UCSF. Students enroll in both universities and regularly interact with world-renowned faculty, clinicians, and industry partners across the Bay Area. This unique cross-campus experience enables students to translate ideas into impactful medtech solutions.

MTM prepares students for a wide range of careers in the healthcare and medtech industry. Graduates go on to roles in product management, clinical medicine, regulatory affairs, consulting, and entrepreneurship, among others. The program’s emphasis on real-world skills makes MTM well suited for students aiming to enter industry, launch a startup, or pursue further clinical training.

Unlike traditional graduate programs that focus solely on either research or business, MTM integrates engineering and entrepreneurship in a single intensive year. The curriculum is structured around three core themes:

• Science and Engineering
• Clinical Needs and Strategies
• Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology

These core themes equip students with the breadth and depth needed to understand each stage of the biomedical translational pipeline. Coursework is complemented by a hands-on, team-based capstone project, where students apply classroom learning to practical challenges in translational medicine.

The MTM community does not end upon graduation. MTM is supported by an extensive alumni network working across medtech, healthcare, and related industries. Alumni stay actively involved in the program, returning regularly for informational sessions and alumni networking events with current students.
